Frequently asked questions
At what age should my child have their first eye exam?
Unless your child has a noticeable eye or vision problem or your pediatrician recommends one earlier, we generally recommend a first comprehensive eye exam between kindergarten and first grade.
Do you take my vision/health insurance?
We take most health and vision insurances that are available.
What if I don't like my glasses?
All of our eyewear is guaranteed. If you're not happy we will make it better.
Will you dilate my eyes?
The standard of care for an eye exam includes dilation. In order to fully evaluate your eyes for many conditions, dilation is needed. We will never force you to be dilated if you do not wish. In addition, we will never sell you on something that supposedly replaces dilation but requires you to waive your right to a proper eye exam.
How long does an eye exam take?
Plan on spending about an hour with us. If you need more time to browse our extensive eyewear collection, we will never rush you out the door!
What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
In simple terms, ophthalmologists are MDs or DOs and perform surgery, and optometrists are ODs who don't perform surgery in Rhode Island. Otherwise, both specialties are trained to diagnose and treat all eye conditions non-surgically. When a need for surgery arises, Family Eye Health Associates has extensive relationships with some of the best ophthalmologists in the state and will ensure that you get the very best care.
